Hey there, future soccer star!
Want to learn about the coolest way to play football? It’s called FUNiño. And trust me, once you try it, you’ll love it.
FUNino football is different from regular soccer. Way different. And way more fun.
Instead of 11 players running around a giant field, you play 3 versus 3 on a small pitch.
Instead of one big goal at each end, there are TWO smaller goals. And guess what? You touch the ball way more times!
I’ve coached hundreds of kids through FUNino Rules. And I’m going to teach you the same way I teach them.
We start super easy. Then we add more skills as we go.
No confusion. No stress. Just fun football.
FUNino Rules for Beginners

Let’s learn together!
What Makes Funino Soccer Special?
Before we dive into rules, let me tell you why Funino soccer is amazing.
The Funino meaning is simple. “FUN” + “niño” (Spanish for child) = Fun for kids. That’s the whole idea.
A smart coach named Horst Wein created this in 1990. He noticed something important.
Young kids learn better in small fields with fewer players. They touch the ball more. They make more decisions. They improve faster.
Why FUNiño helps you become smarter:
In big games with 11 players, you might touch the ball 5 times in a whole match. In FUNiño, you touch it 50 times in just 10 minutes! More touches = better skills. Simple math.
But it’s not just about touches. The Funino concept teaches something called “game intelligence.” That means reading the game, making smart choices, and thinking like a real footballer.
Now, let’s learn the rules level by level!
Level 1 – Easy Rules (Start Here!)
These are the super basic rules. Master these first.
Rule: Small Field Size
What it means:
- The FUNino field size is tiny compared to regular pitches
- Standard size is 32 meters long and 22 meters wide
- That’s about the size of a basketball court
- Some places use basketball courts or handball courts instead
- Small space means more action!
Beginner mistake: Kids think they need to kick the ball really far, like on big fields.
What to do instead: Keep the ball close. Use short passes. Dribble more. The field is small, so you don’t need power – you need control.
Rule: Three Players Per Team (3v3)
What it means:
- Each team has only 3 players on the field
- One more player waits off the field (rotation player)
- That’s 4 total players per team
- Everyone plays. No bench warmers.
Beginner mistake: Trying to do everything alone because there are only 3 players.
What to do instead: Work together! With only 3 players, you NEED your teammates. Pass. Support. Communicate.
Rule: No Throw-Ins Ever
What it means:
- Ball goes out on the sideline? No problem.
- You don’t throw it in
- You pass it in with your feet or dribble it back in
- Opponents must stay 3 meters away
- Same rule when the ball goes out at the end line
Beginner mistake: Picking up the ball with hands like in regular soccer.
What to do instead: Keep your feet on the ball. Pass it to a teammate or dribble it yourself. Feet only!
Rule: Four Goals Total
What it means:
- There are TWO goals at each end
- Each goal is small (2 meters wide, 1 meter tall)
- The two goals at each end are 12 meters apart
- You can score in either goal when attacking
- You must defend both goals
Beginner mistake: Focusing on just one goal and forgetting about the other one.
What to do instead: Always look at both goals. If one is blocked, attack the other one! This is what makes FUNiño smart.
Level 2 – Passing and Dribbling Restarts
Now we add a bit more. You’re doing great!
Rule: All Restarts with Feet
What it means:
- Ball goes out? Use your feet to restart
- Free kick? Pass or dribble
- No goal kicks. No corner kicks. No throw-ins.
- Everything stays on the ground
- Game flows faster this way
Beginner mistake: Stopping and waiting for someone to tell you what to do.
What to do instead: Just play! Pass it in quickly or dribble. Don’t wait. Keep the game moving.
Rule: Fair Play Kick-Off
What it means:
- Games start with a special kick-off
- One team passes to the other team
- That team passes right back
- Then the first team attacks
- It’s about respect and sportsmanship
Beginner mistake: Kicking the ball hard at kick-off, trying to score immediately.
What to do instead: Pass gently to an opponent. Wait for them to pass back. THEN start playing properly. It’s called Fair Play for a reason!
Rule: No Offside
What it means:
- You can stand anywhere on the Funino pitch
- Even right next to the opponent’s goals
- Completely legal
- No offside whistle ever
Beginner mistake: Being scared to run forwar,d thinking offside will be called.
What to do instead: Run free! Move anywhere you want. This creates space and chances. Enjoy the freedom!
Level 3 – Shooting Zone & Valid Goals
Getting trickier now. But you can handle it!
Rule: Must Shoot from Inside the Zone
What it means:
- There’s a special “shooting zone” 6 meters from the end line
- You can ONLY score if you shoot from inside this zone
- Shoot from outside? The goal doesn’t count even if the ball goes in
- Both feet must be inside the zone when you shoot
Beginner mistake: Shooting from far away, hoping to score.
What to do instead: Dribble closer! Get inside that 6-meter zone before you shoot. Be brave. Take the ball forward.
Rule: No Goal Line Camping
What it means:
- You cannot stand on the goal line for more than 2 seconds
- This stops players from just blocking the goal the whole game
- You must be active in defending
- Move around, don’t just stand there
Beginner mistake: Standing right on the goal line the entire game, thinking you’re helping.
What to do instead: Defend actively! Pressure the ball. Force mistakes. Only protect the goal line when the opponent is about to shoot.
Level 4 – Rotation After Goals
This rule makes FUNiño fair for everyone.
Rule: Substitute One Player After Every Goal
What it means:
- Every time ANY team scores, BOTH teams must substitute
- One player comes off, a rotation player comes on
- This happens in a fixed order
- Substitution happens at the halfway line
- Then the play continues
Beginner mistake: Forgetting to rotate and staying on the field too long.
What to do instead: Know your rotation order! When a goal is scored, sprint to the halfway line. High-five your teammate. They come on, you go off. Simple!
Rule: Extra Player When Losing Big
What it means:
- If your team is losing by more than 3 goals, you get help
- Your rotation player can join the game
- Now you play 4 versus 3 until you score once
- This keeps games competitive and fun
Beginner mistake: Giving up when losing by a lot.
What to do instead: Use your extra player advantage! You’ve got 4 against their 3. Work together and score. The game stays exciting this way!
Level 5 – Penalty Attack Rules
The most advanced rule. But also the most exciting!
Rule: Penalty Attack Instead of Penalty Kick
What it means:
- When a defender fouls in their shooting zone, no penalty kick
- Instead, there’s a “penalty attack”
- One attacker dribbles from midfield toward a goal
- One defender starts at the goal line and can chase
- The other 4 players start behind and join when the attacker reaches the zone
- It’s like a mini-game inside the game!
Beginner mistake: Rushing the penalty attack and losing the ball quickly.
What to do instead: Stay calm. Choose which goal to attack. Dribble with control. Wait for your teammates to support you. Be smart!
Rule: No Referees (You Call Your Own Fouls)
What it means:
- There are no referees in FUNino football
- Funino players call their own fouls
- Be honest. Be fair. Be respectful.
- A game observer helps if there’s a big problem
- You learn responsibility this way
Beginner mistake: Arguing about every single decision for 5 minutes.
What to do instead: Accept the call and play on. If you fouled, admit it. If you didn’t, say so calmly. Then keep playing. The game is more important than one call.
FUNino Pitch Dimensions
Here’s exactly how big the field is:
| Court Type | Length | Width | Goals Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard FUNiño | 32 meters | 22 meters | 12 meters apart |
| Basketball Court | 26 meters | 14 meters | 8 meters apart |
| Handball Court | 40 meters | 20 meters | 12 meters apart |
| Shooting Zone | 6 meters from the end line | Full width | Both ends same |
The field adapts to what space you have. Cool, right?
FUNino Players Format
Here’s the player breakdown:
| Role | Number | What They Do |
|---|---|---|
| Active Players | 3 per team | Play on the field |
| Rotation Player | 1 per team | Waits to substitute in |
| Total Team Size | 4 players | Everyone plays equally |
| Goalkeeper | 0 | No goalies! Everyone defends |
| Fixed Positions | 0 | All players do everything |
Everyone plays every role. That’s what makes you a complete player!
Game Time Structure (Champions League Format)
Most FUNiño festivals use this timing:
| Round | Playing Time | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 1 |
| Round 2 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 2 |
| Round 3 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 3 |
| Round 4 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 4 |
| Round 5 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 5 |
| Round 6 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 6 |
| Round 7 | 7 minutes | Match against Team 7 |
| Total | 49 minutes | 7 different opponents! |
You play 7 short games in one morning. That’s a LOT of football experience!
Some festivals use 10-minute rounds instead. Either way, you play multiple teams in one day.
Why These FUNino Rules Make You Smarter?
Let me explain how FUNino Rules improve your brain for football.
Game Intelligence Development:
Regular soccer = you touch the ball 5 times, mostly kick it far away
FUNiño = you touch ball 50+ times, make 50+ decisions
More decisions = smarter player. Your brain learns patterns. You see space faster. You read the game better.
Four Goals = Tactical Thinking:
One goal at each end = just kick it toward that goal
Two goals at each end = which goal is open? Where are defenders? Which teammates are free? Should I pass or dribble?
See? More thinking. Better football brain.
No Positions = Complete Player:
Regular soccer = “You’re the defender, stay back!”
FUNiño = Everyone attacks. Everyone defends. Everyone transitions.
You learn all parts of football, not just one job.
